GENERAL INFORMATION
TOURIST OFFICES
The Punjab Govt. tourist
office is opposite to Railway Station and one also at the Youth Hostel (Telephone
#2231452),1 k.m East to Bus station and fairly helpful. It is open from
Monday to Saturday and Timing's are 9 am to 3 pm. The Information Office
in Golden Temple remains open daily, the Timing's are 8 am to 1 pm & 2.30
pm to 8 pm and the Staff is very helpful. You can also contact the S.G.P.C.
information counter just outside the main Entrance of Railway station for
information and free bus service to Golden Temple.
MONEY
There are numerous Authorized
Money Changers on Link Road Opposite Railway Station but we personally recommend
only The Bank Of Punjab Branches at the Golden Temple & On Court road (For
US $ only), Standard Chartered Grindlays (Mall Road), HDFC Bank (The Mall,
Hall Bazar)
The
State Bank of India (Near Town Hall) in Old city
to change Dollar's, Pound Sterling and other currencies.
IN CASE YOU WANT TO USE AN ATM (Accepting Visa, MasterCard etc.) YOU CAN USE ONES
AT Bank Of Punjab (Golden Temple Complex, Court Road, University Complex) or at HDFC Bank (Mall Road). Browse for the contact no.'s for the banks at

POST & COMMUNICATION
A Post office at the Golden Temple sells Stamps. It remains Open from Monday to Saturday & timings are 9.30 am to 6.30 pm. The Main General Post Office is on Court Road, North-West to railway station. is Open Monday to Saturday timings are 9 am to 5 pm. Railway station also has a R.M.S Post office, that is open from 3:30 pm till 8:30 pm. You can find number of Telephone booths almost on every street. You can also access to the Internet at : The newly opened SIFY i-way Cyber cafe chain with more than 15 cafes across the city at Kishore Electronics-Lawrence Rd.; Opp. Guru Nanak Hospital Majitha Road and more. Crux (Lawrence Road); Cyber Surf (Near Golden Temple) are good place to surf the net.
Places to Eat
Amritsar is famous for food and it's taste.... If you are in the Golden Temple then it's is interesting to join the pilgrims for a common kitchen food known as "GURU KA LANGAR" and you don't have to pay for this, it's free for everyone, other than this there are number of places where you can have Punjab's delicious food, some of the good places are:

SHOPPING
Shopping options
mostly revolve around handicrafts and rugs with prices being competitive, and
a little bargaining being of good use. Woolen blankets and sweaters are cheaper
in Amritsar than in other parts of India as they are locally manufactured. Katra
Jaimal Singh in the old city is a good shopping area.
Amritsar is famous for Woolen's. Woolen-Blankets, Shawls, Lohis, Sweater's are
supposed to be cheaper in Amritsar than other places in India. Amritsar also has
OCM mills at Chheherta, Essma in Putlighar area and Amritsar Swadeshi Wollen Mills
on the Ram Tirath Rd.
